OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Health, a Data-Driven AI Assistant for U.S. Users

Launch and Core Functionality

OpenAI has begun offering ChatGPT Health to U.S. residents aged 18 and older, expanding a beta that started in January. The experience lives inside the regular ChatGPT interface but can reference personal medical records—doctor notes, lab results, medication lists, and family history—whenever a health-related question is asked. Users connect their data through a new Health tab, linking Apple Health (via HealthKit) and provider portals such as Kaiser Permanent and One Medical. The system asks for explicit permission each time it wants to use the linked information and allows users to set time-limited access or disconnect accounts at any moment.

How It Operates and Intended Use

OpenAI frames the tool as a way to summarize appointments, clarify test results, and help users become better patients rather than to deliver diagnoses or treatment plans. The chatbot can suggest prompts, display recent health trends, and generate meal-planning or fitness advice grounded in the user’s own records. Safety guardrails are built into the latest GPT-5.6 series, which are said to recognize when urgent medical intervention is needed and to defer to human clinicians.

Usage Statistics and Medical Oversight

OpenAI reports that over 300 million health-related queries are submitted each week, a rise from the 40 million weekly queries noted in the January beta. About 70 % of those queries still occur outside the dedicated Health tab. The company also cites a network of more than 260 physicians who have reviewed over 700,000 AI-generated responses across 49 languages and 26 medical specialties during the past two years.

Official Statements on Data Privacy and Safety

OpenAI asserts that connected health information will not be used to train its foundation models or to target advertisements. Users retain control over when the chatbot can access their data, and any linked records can be deleted or disconnected at any time. The company emphasizes that the service is not a substitute for professional medical care and that its responses should not be treated as official diagnoses.
