In 1958 USDA adopted the sterile-insect technique of Edward F. Knipling and Raymond C. Bushland, wiping out screwworm in Florida by 1959 and southern U.S. by 1966. A U.S.–Mexico program finished in 1972, funded with about $100 million, cut infestations 99.9 % and protected beef market. New cases in 2024-2026 have prompted Texas Commissioner Sid Miller to revisit the Douglas, Arizona cattle port, recalling cross-border success.
