Announcement at Comic-Con
During a morning panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Hulu confirmed that three extended-length “Futurama” specials—dubbed “XXXL-Sized”—are in production and will debut in 2027, beginning with a Christmas-themed edition. The same event unveiled a trailer for Season 14, which the streaming service will launch on Monday, August 3.
Creative Leadership and Production Partners
The series was created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and showrunner David X. Cohen. Executive producers also include Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz. Voice talent returning includes John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil Lamarr and David Herman. Production is handled by 20th Television Animation, a Disney Television Studios unit, with animation services provided by Rough Draft Studios.
Release Plan and Distribution
Season 14 will premiere on Hulu (and on Disney+ for bundle subscribers) with two new episodes released on August 3, followed by weekly episodes each Monday. International viewers can watch the new episodes on Disney+. The three supersized specials are slated for 2027, with the first set for a holiday release.
Significance for Hulu’s Animated Portfolio
The announcement expands Hulu’s original animated lineup, positioning “Futurama” alongside other Disney-owned properties. By extending the franchise with longer-format specials, Hulu aims to attract both legacy fans and new audiences, reinforcing its strategy to deliver exclusive, high-profile content in the competitive streaming market.
