The Houthi offensive comes after Saudi-led coalition airstrikes hit the Yemeni port of Hodeida, damaging the city’s port and a state-run telecommunications corporation and injuring two people, according to Houthi health-ministry spokesman Anees al-Asbahi. The rebels have warned they could close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—a chokepoint through which roughly 12 % of global trade and a quarter of container traffic pass—in retaliation for the Saudi blockade of Yemen and recent attacks on Yemen’s capital airport. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, called for “diplomacy and dialogue” to resolve the Yemen conflict without further military confrontations.

The broader war, which reignited after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, has caused more than 3,400 deaths in Iran, according to the Iranian Health Ministry. Reported fatalities also include 18 U.S. service members, 24 civilians in Israel, over 4,000 people in Lebanon, and 38 Israeli troops.
