Romania’s air force intercepted a third unmanned aircraft in as many days, using an F-16 fighter jet to bring down a drone over the Black Sea five minutes after it entered Romanian airspace. The incidents occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, marking the first time the NATO member has shot down Russian-linked drones.
Recent Drone Incursions and Defensive Measures
Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Romania has reported dozens of stray drone incursions. A drone struck an apartment building in Galati in May, wounding two people, and a maritime drone exploded in the Black Sea port of Constanta without causing casualties. In response, Romania integrated the US-made Merops counter-drone system at the end of June and, in 2025, its parliament passed a law authorising the shooting down of drones that breach national airspace.
Official Reactions from Romanian Leaders and NATO
Foreign Minister Oana Toiu summoned Russia’s ambassador, describing the repeated violations as “unacceptable and intolerable.” President Dan echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that Romania’s airspace is also that of NATO and the European Union. NATO’s senior military spokesperson Martin O’Donnell confirmed the drones appeared to be of Russian origin and noted the alliance’s broader effort to bolster air defence:
