Amazon Expands Alexa Plus with AI-Powered Smart-Home Toolkit and New Service Framework

Amazon announced a major upgrade to its Alexa Plus digital assistant, positioning the update as a more conversational and autonomous hub for connected homes. The assistant will interpret natural-language requests and automatically select the appropriate device function, eliminating the need for users to recall exact commands. For example, a user could ask Alexa to wash work clothes with a “cold wash only” tag, and the assistant would choose the correct program on a compatible washing machine.

The rollout includes an AI-driven developer toolkit that lets manufacturers expose a broader range of product capabilities to Alexa Plus. Companies such as Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, Govee, iRobot, Moen Flo, PetSafe, Pila Energy, SONOFF, Tapo, Twinkly, Whirlpool, Yale Home and Anker Innovations have already joined the program. Amazon says the toolkit enables Alexa to learn from user habits and suggest new automations, such as starting a coffee maker when a morning alarm sounds.

Beyond the home, Amazon is adopting the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open framework that simplifies connections between AI assistants and external tools. The protocol is expected to accelerate the development of Alexa experiences for services including Canva, Cengage, Crystal Dynamics, Headspace, Lyft, Priceline, Viator, Virgin Atlantic, Brightline, FlixBus and Greyhound, with implementations slated for later this year.

Activity levels rose by almost 50 % during the first month after upgrade, and the number of user-created Routines doubled compared with prior usage.
