Diego Luna to Receive Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival

Mexican actor-director-producer Diego Luna will be honored with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival. The award ceremony will occur during the festival’s run from August 14-21, 2026 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition to receiving the accolade, Luna will present his latest directorial feature “Ashes,” which premiered at Cannes earlier this year, and will conduct a masterclass for emerging filmmakers and festival audiences.

Luna first gained international attention with his breakout performance in Alfonso Cuarón’s “Y Tu Mamá También” (2001), a role that established him as a leading Mexican screen talent. He has since collaborated with directors such as Steven Spielberg, Gus Van Sant, Harmony Korine and Agustín Díaz Yanes, and appeared in high-profile projects including “Star Wars: Rogue One,” “Andor” (Disney+), and “Narcos: México.” As a filmmaker, Luna debuted with the documentary “J.C. Chávez” (2007), directed the narrative feature “Abel” (2010)—which earned the Horizontes Latinos Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and a Mexican Academy Award for Best Screenplay—and later directed “Mr. Pig” (Sundance 2016). Beyond his creative work, he co-founded the traveling documentary festival Ambulante in 2005 to promote cultural exchange and civic engagement.

The festival’s program will also feature a range of international films and industry panels, positioning Sarajevo as a key cultural hub in the Balkans for the 2026 season.
