Historical Context

In 2005 UNESCO inscribed Peru’s Machu Picchu, a mixed cultural-natural site covering more than 35,000 ha of cloud-forest and high-altitude ecosystems. The World Heritage Convention, created in 1972, later added other mixed sites such as Greece’s Mount Olympus, which now attracts large numbers of visitors. These successive inscriptions illustrate UNESCO’s growing challenge of managing tourism pressure and climate risks at globally significant landscapes.
