Democratic Primary in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District: Thanedar vs. McKinney
7/28/2026, 2:10:11 AM
Primary Contest Overview
Incumbent U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar and state Rep. Donavan McKinney are the only candidates in the Democratic primary slated for Aug. 4, 2026. Both present themselves as anti-Trump progressives, backing universal health care, the elimination of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and an end to the war in Iran. Political insiders view the race as heavily tilted toward Thanedar because of his larger war chest and higher name recognition.
Historical Representation & Stakes
Thanedar’s 2022 victory marked the first time the majority-Black city of Detroit lacked a Black congressional representative since 1955. The district includes Detroit, the Grosse Pointes and Downriver communities. If both incumbent Detroit-area House members—Thanedar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib—win re-election, Michigan would have no Black members of the Congressional Black Caucus, leaving the state without a dedicated voice on its key issues.
Campaign Finance Landscape
Thanedar has entered the final weeks with roughly $7 million for advertising and outreach, having loaned his campaign more than $2 million this year, including $800,000 in June and over $1.3 million in July. Campaign filings reported by the Detroit News indicate at least $232,000 of his donations were bundled by the pro-Israel American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
McKinney’s campaign reported $264,000 on hand as of June 30 2026, a stark contrast to Thanedar’s fundraising. He acknowledged the disparity, saying, “I can’t outraise him; I can’t outspend him.”
