In 1994 MLB reorganized each league into East, Central and West divisions and added a wild-card berth, doubling postseason teams from four to eight. The system launched in 1995 after the strike, awarding the Seattle Mariners the inaugural wild-card and giving the New York Yankees a half-game division lead.
