The eight-episode concluding season of the German noir series Babylon Berlin will debut on the on-demand service of public broadcaster ARD in September. The episodes will also be broadcast in two “binge blocks” of four episodes each later that month, giving viewers both streaming and linear options for the series’ end.
Historical Setting of the Final Season
The narrative covers the last days of the Weimar Republic, beginning in February 1933—shortly after Adolf Hitler’s appointment as Reich Chancellor—and concluding on March 5, 1933, when a violent campaign against political opponents culminated in elections that cemented Hitler’s absolute power. This period anchors the drama’s exploration of Germany’s rapid slide into dictatorship.
Creative Team and Production Partners
Lead actors Volker Bruch (detective Gereon Rath) and Liv Lisa Fries (assistant Charlotte Ritter) return for the finale. Series co-creators and showrunners Henk Handlogten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer also resume their roles. Production is a collaboration among X Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, and regional broadcasters WDR, SWR, HR, and Radio Bremen, with sales and co-production support from Beta Film. Executive producers include Uwe Schott, Tom Tykwer, Stefan Arndt, Michael Polle, Jan Mojto, Dirk Schürhoff, Moritz Herzogenberg, Christoph Pellander, Carolin Haasis, Alexander Bickel, Caren Toennissen-Brand, Manfred Hattendorf, Monika Denisch, and Jörg Himstedt.
Expanded Media Tie-Ins
To accompany the finale, the creators are launching a Babylon Berlin-themed video game developed by von Borries with ARD’s gaming unit SWR X Lab. A making-of documentary directed by Christian Jakob—produced in partnership with Handlogten—will detail the series’ production. Additionally, an audio-drama series set in the show’s world will extend the narrative beyond television.
Distribution and Audience Reach
After its initial run on ARD, the series found a new U.S. home in 2024 on boutique streamer MhZ Choice, which aired season 4 last year. The upcoming final season will thus be accessible to both German and international audiences through the on-demand platform and the scheduled broadcast blocks, concluding the series that debuted in 2017 as the most expensive non-English-language drama of its time.
