Wild-Born Beavers Born in Glen Affric After Four Centuries

Conservationists have confirmed the birth of at least two wild-born beaver kits in Glen Affric, a 43,500-acre reserve in the Scottish Highlands. The kits were observed emerging from a lodge at Loch Beinn a Mheadhoin after being born in the spring months of May or June. This marks the first successful reproduction of Eurasian beavers in the glen since the species disappeared from Scotland more than 400 years ago.

Eurasian beavers were hunted to extinction in Scotland over four centuries ago, driven by demand for their pelts, meat, and the secretion castoreum. Legal reintroductions began in 2009, starting with a licensed release in Knapdale. Since then, both authorized releases and a series of unauthorized, “rogue” releases have occurred, prompting the Scottish government to grant beavers protected-native status in 2019. The current births are the result of a rewilding project led by the Findhorn-based charity Trees for Life in partnership with Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS).
