On 20 September a 41-year-old man, Ansar Younis of Sheffield, attacked an unconscious woman on a city-centre street at about 01:00 BST. Four teenage girls who witnessed the assault confronted Younis and filmed the attack. South Yorkshire Police reported that the girls called the ambulance service, which summoned officers to the scene. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and forensic evidence was collected. The girls’ video enabled police to identify Younis, who was arrested and later charged. After a trial at Sheffield Crown Court in March, Younis was found guilty and, on 2 July, was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment.

The four girls acted immediately, challenging Younis and recording the offence rather than remaining passive. Their footage was described by investigators as “absolutely instrumental at trial,” providing the primary evidence that linked Younis to the crime. By stepping in, the girls helped secure a conviction and have been publicly recognised for their bravery.
