Michael J. Fox to Receive Television Academy’s Bob Hope Humanitarian Award

The Television Academy announced that Michael J. Fox will be honored with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award during the non-televised portion of the Emmy Awards in early September. The award will be broadcast as part of the 78th Emmy Awards ceremony in mid-September on NBC and streamed on Peacock.

Fox, a 19-time Emmy nominee with five wins—including three consecutive lead-comedy actor awards for *Family Ties* and a guest-actor win for *Rescue Me*—is also known for roles in the *Back to the Future* trilogy, *Teen Wolf*, and the Apple TV series *Shrinking*. In 1998 he disclosed his young-onset Parkinson’s diagnosis and founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000. The foundation is now the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s research, supporting more than $3 billion in research programs.

Created in 2002, the award honors a television-industry member whose philanthropic efforts reflect Bob Hope’s legacy of altruism. Oprah Winfrey was the inaugural recipient. Past honorees include Danny Thomas (posthumously, 2004), George Clooney (2010), Sean Penn (2022), and Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen (2023). Fox’s selection marks only the sixth presentation of the award in its 24-year history.

Special-awards committee co-chair Hillary Bibicoff added that Fox’s advocacy has had a lasting worldwide impact, while co-chair Joseph Litzinger noted that Fox’s dedication serves as an inspiration to others facing the disease.
