Ellen Pompeo, who portrayed Meredith Grey, repeatedly advocated for the series to conclude, arguing that the narrative needed an end point. Pompeo’s push for an exit was publicized in a 2021 interview, where she expressed frustration that financial incentives kept the show alive. Ultimately, Pompeo left the series in 2022 after nineteen seasons, while other actors have taken more abrupt or less coordinated exits.
