Trump’s Priorities Under Scrutiny in New National Poll

A CNN-conducted poll of U.S. adults finds that 73 % say President Donald Trump is not paying enough attention to the nation’s most important problems, while only 27 % believe he has set the right priorities. Overall approval sits at 34 %, matching the low level recorded after the January 6 2021 Capitol attack. Half of respondents strongly disapprove of his policies, and a record-low 15 % strongly approve.

Two-thirds of those surveyed think Trump’s military actions in Iran have worsened conditions for the United States, and 67 % say his policies have harmed the economy. Only 22 % view the economy as improved by his actions, and 21 % believe the Iran war has helped the country. A growing majority—74 %—say the president lacks a clear strategy for the conflict, up from 67 % in a March poll. Inflation and gas prices dominate economic concerns: three-quarters are unhappy with rising inflation, and 79 % disapprove of his handling of gas prices, which have risen amid the U.S.–Israeli involvement in Iran.

The poll shows strong opposition to Trump’s efforts to remodel Washington landmarks, including a new White House ballroom whose construction was photographed on July 14. Fifty-eight percent of respondents feel dissatisfied or angry about these projects, while only 17 % express positive feelings. Among Republicans, just 43 % view the construction favorably, and 35 % say the projects do not matter to them.

More than six in ten Americans say Trump has gone too far in pursuing personal business interests while in office. Fifty-seven percent view his earnings of over $2 billion during his presidency as a negative, with only 7 % seeing it as a positive. The same share believes his financial activities have not been adequately separated from his presidential duties.

Within the Republican base, enthusiasm for Trump’s second term has fallen to 19 %, down from 38 % the previous spring. Approval of his handling of voting-rights issues remains his highest at 41 %, but overall partisan support appears eroding as dissatisfaction with his priorities, foreign policy, and domestic projects spreads across the electorate.
