Trump Imposes Tariffs
- President Donald Trump signed three Section 338 proclamations that impose 50% tariffs on selected Canadian goods, taking effect on August 19, 2026.
- The tariffs cover roughly US$20 billion of Canadian imports, about 4.9% of 2024 U.S. imports.
- Canadian imports of U.S. vehicles fell 22% (?US$5.6 billion) while alcoholic-beverage imports dropped 81% (?US$582 million) in the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
- Estimates say the new tariffs will add about US$100 billion in yearly costs, primarily borne by U.S. consumers.
