Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets Unprecedented China Opening

7/30/2026, 7:56:32 AM

Record-Breaking China Opening

The latest Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film opened across China on a Wednesday, pulling in more than $16.5 million (RMB 112 million) by midday. Ticket-sale platform Maoyan projected a $37.4 million (RMB 254 million) first-day total, while rival tracker Dengta expects the film’s ultimate China gross to exceed $265 million (RMB 1.8 billion). Both forecasts would place the movie among the highest-earning U.S. superhero releases in China since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, surpassing the $246 million haul of Avatar: The Way of Water.

Market Context and Prior Superhero Performance

Spider-Man’s predecessor, Spider-Man: Far From Home, earned $98 million over its debut weekend in 2019 and finished with $199 million, remaining the last U.S. superhero film to clear $100 million in the market. The anticipated follow-up, Spider-Man: No Way Home, never opened in China after regulators objected to the prominence of the Statue of Liberty, and Sony declined to edit the scene. From mid-2019 to early 2023, Marvel titles were blocked, leading to modest earnings for later entries: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $87 million in 2023 and Venom: The Last Dance earned $94 million in 2024, while most other recent superhero releases lingered in the low-teens. By contrast, Venom: The Last Dance posted $9.4 million on its first day in 2024, far behind Spider-Man’s opening.

Forecasts and Financial Projections

Maoyan’s full-run forecast, released on the eve of the film’s debut, pegs the China total at $255 million (RMB 1.73 billion). Dengta’s higher estimate pushes the ceiling above $265 million. Analysts anticipate a North-American opening around $180 million, contributing to a projected global launch exceeding $425 million. Presales in China reached $18.6 million (RMB 126.2 million), the strongest for any imported film over the past three summers.

Strategic Release and Industry Impact

Sony and Marvel granted the film the world’s earliest release date in China—two days ahead of the North-American rollout—and secured an exclusive IMAX launch unavailable to U.S. audiences, where IMAX screens are occupied by Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Tom Holland and Zendaya attended a Shanghai premiere, with Holland recounting a meeting with Jackie Chan, whose stunt team reportedly helped choreograph action sequences.

Upcoming Global Rollout

Following the Chinese debut, the film is slated for a North-American opening in the coming weeks, with industry watchers expecting it to become the most lucrative U.S. superhero entry in China since the 2019 blockbuster wave.
