Jackdaw Gas Field Nears Approval Amid Political Pressure

The Shell-operated Jackdaw gas field, located about 150 miles off Aberdeen, is expected to receive regulatory approval as early as September. If signed off, the project could begin production within months and supply gas by winter, enough to meet roughly 6 % of the United Kingdom’s gas needs and power around a million homes. The field was first approved in 2022, but the Court of Session quashed that consent last year for an inadequate climate-impact assessment. Developer Adura—a joint venture of Shell and Equinor—submitted a revised environmental assessment with the consultation window closing on August 10, and its chief executive Neil McCulloch says the field could start delivering gas from October 1, provided ministers grant final approval.
