Derrick Henry Says Retirement Isn’t on His Radar

Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry, now 32, entered his 11th NFL season without contemplating retirement. After a training-camp practice, Henry said he does not begin a season thinking about ending his career and is focused on improving his play and helping the team win.

Since turning 30 and joining the Ravens, Henry has amassed 3,516 rushing yards, averaged 5.6 yards per carry and recorded 32 touchdowns over two seasons. His 13,018 career rushing yards place him 10th on the NFL’s all-time list. At his current pace, a 1,500-yard season would move him into the league’s top six, surpassing legends such as Eric Dickerson, Jerome Bettis, LaDainian Tomlinson and Curtis Martin. Only four running backs—Emmitt Smith, Ricky Williams, Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore—have posted 1,000-yard seasons at age 32 or older since 2000.

Henry reiterated that his motivation is love for the game; he said he will retire only when that passion fades. Ravens offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley noted that Henry’s enjoyment and health could allow him to continue as long as he wishes. Head coach Jesse Minter praised Henry’s work ethic and physical attributes, adding that the team may occasionally limit his repetitions to preserve freshness throughout the season. The pursuit of a championship remains a primary driver, as Henry has yet to win a Super Bowl despite an AFC Championship appearance in 2019.
