Documentary Offers Closure on Jacob Wetterling Case

More than 25 years after 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling was abducted from St. Joseph, Minnesota, police identified Danny Heinrich as a person of interest. Heinrich later confessed to Jacob’s murder and sexual assault, as well as the assault of 12-year-old Jared Scheierl, a victim of the same perpetrator. Patty and Jerry Wetterling have since founded the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center and co-authored *Dear Jacob: A Mother’s Journey of Hope* with amateur investigator Joy Baker, advocating for stronger child-safety laws.

Director Chris Newberry, a Twin Cities native who was a teenager when Jacob disappeared, began filming *Echoes in the Night: The Search for Jacob Wetterling* after the confession and discovery of Jacob’s remains in 2016. The documentary, which debuted in April at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, emphasizes the family’s path to healing rather than sensationalizing the crime. Screenings are scheduled throughout Minnesota, beginning with a showing in St. Cloud in August, each accompanied by Q&A sessions with Newberry, the Wetterlings, Joy Baker, and Jared Scheierl.

Newberry explained that the film’s “key” was honesty and communication, aiming to portray the Wetterlings’ “grace and strength” amid tragedy. He noted that while Jacob’s story is sorrowful, the documentary also highlights the extensive advocacy work carried out in his name.
