Fabien Frankel Reflects on Criston Cole’s Death and a Changing Fan Reception

In the sixth episode of season three of House of the Dragon, the once-polarizing knight Criston Cole meets his end abruptly. Surrounded by an army, Cole challenges two opponents to duel, but instead three arrows strike him off-screen, ending the fight before it begins. The scene marks the conclusion of a major arc that began with Cole’s rise during the Dance of the Dragons.

Fabien Frankel explained that the choreography for the death sequence was the most demanding fight he had performed on the series. He contrasted it with his earlier short duel against Daemon (played by Matt Smith) in season one, noting that this was his first “really long choreography” involving extensive ground combat. While filming, Frankel was aware that the scene would be his last as Criston, but he said the knowledge did not make the stunt feel any more or less like a life-or-death moment.

Frankel also revealed that, prior to shooting, he watched only the opening moments of the episode to avoid disappointment with his own performance.

For the first five years of the series, Frankel said he endured “pure hatred” directed at Criston Cole, which often felt personal. In recent weeks, however, he has noticed a markedly different tone from fans. He described the current response as “lovely” and “unexpected,” emphasizing that supporters now praise his performance rather than the character’s actions. Frankel expressed relief that audiences are distinguishing the actor from the villainous role, noting that the outpouring of appreciation from friends, family, and fans has been “very touching.”

With Criston’s storyline concluded, Frankel said he is open to a wide range of possibilities. He mentioned an interest in exploring romantic-comedy material and expressed enthusiasm for the idea of joining the Batman universe, whether as a villain or as Bruce Wayne himself. He also indicated that he will consider any “great script” offered by a notable filmmaker, while acknowledging that the next few months feel “fresh” after years of continuous television work.

He affirmed that, despite the intense fan backlash, the role remains one of the most rewarding in his career, and he would prefer future roles that similarly challenge viewers rather than those that generate apathy.
