Axel Rudakubana: Life Sentence, Prison Assaults, and Transfer to Broadmoor

Nineteen-year-old Axel Rudakubana received a life sentence with a minimum term of 52 years for killing three children—Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King and Elsie Dot Stancombe (7)—and attempting to murder ten others at a Taylor Swift dance class on July 29 2024. In the months that followed, the Metropolitan Police reported that he was charged with assault on an emergency worker on May 6 2025, attempted grievous bodily harm on May 8 2025, possession of an offensive weapon on June 26 2025, and a further emergency-worker assault on October 28 2025. He was additionally charged on July 28 for the same series of offences.

The murders occurred during a children’s dance lesson in Southport, prompting nationwide outrage. In addition to the three fatalities, eight other children, the class instructor Leanne Lucas, and businessman John Hayes survived attempted attacks.

Following the prison incidents, the Ministry of Justice confirmed that Rudakubana was moved from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor, the UK’s oldest high-security psychiatric facility. Under the Mental Health Act, officials acting for the Justice Secretary must follow clinical recommendations when transferring prisoners deemed to pose an increased risk because of mental disorders. Patients in such units receive treatment rather than standard prison custody.

Justice officials emphasized that any offender placed in a secure hospital is required to engage in therapy and treatment before a possible return to prison or release. The Mental Health Act also allows for a swift return to prison when treatment is deemed no longer necessary.

Rudakubana is scheduled to appear via videolink before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 11. The hearing will address the recent prison-related charges and determine any additional custodial measures.
