The Conviction of Robert Bush

Robert Bush, 48, owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Services in Hull, was found guilty of 67 offences spanning more than a decade and received a 20-year prison term. The offences included 30 counts of preventing lawful and decent burial, as well as numerous fraud-related charges. The sentencing took place over a five-day hearing at Hull Crown Court, during which more than 80 victims described discovering their loved ones “rotting” in the mortuary.

Scope of the Abuse

Investigators uncovered more than 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes stored in unsanitary conditions—stacked chaotically on shelves, left on the floor, and covered in mould. Among the victims were a 94-year-old man whose body remained in a cardboard coffin for almost 11 months, and a miscarried infant, Sunny Beverley-Conlin, whose remains were left at the premises for nearly two years before discovery. Families reported receiving ashes that resembled animal remains or adult bone fragments, prompting emotional outbursts in court.

Financial Fraud

Bush sold false funeral plans to 226 people, generating £562,117 in fraudulent revenue. He diverted money intended for 12 charities—including Macmillan Cancer Support, the Salvation Army, and a local hospice—into personal expenses: more than £42,000 on holidays (including a trip to Arizona funded by the fraud), £21,000 on motorcycle racing, and £17,400 on home improvements between 2017 and 2024. He also spent over £9,000 on camping in 2022, the year the infant’s remains were mishandled.

Official Responses

Judge Mr Justice Hilliard described Bush’s conduct as “shocking and disgraceful,” emphasizing the breach of trust toward bereaved families. Dr Richard Lloyd, a human anatomy centre manager, testified that the mortuary’s condition “did not meet industry standards” and amounted to “abandonment” of the deceased.
