Historical Context

In October-November 1973, the United States launched Operation Nickel Grass, airlifting roughly 22,300 tons of tanks, artillery and ammunition to Israel after Egypt and Syria’s surprise attack. The concurrent OAPEC oil embargo sparked the 1973 oil crisis, which reshaped U.S. Middle-East policy and influenced later U.S. arms-sale strategies toward Israel.
