Herzl Grandparents’ Remains to Be Reinterred on Mount Herzl

The skeletal remains of Shimon and Rivka Herzl, the parents of Zionist founder Theodor Herzl, were exhumed on a Wednesday in Belgrade, Serbia, under local legal and religious supervision. Representatives of the World Zionist Organization (WZO), Israel’s Foreign Ministry, and the emergency-response group ZAKA witnessed the procedure. The bodies were placed in specially prepared coffins for transport to Israel, where a state ceremony is scheduled for August 5. The reburial will take place on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, beside their son’s tomb, exactly 77 years after Theodor Herzl’s own reinterment there in 1949.

Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) founded the modern Zionist movement and established the Zionist Organization (later the WZO) in 1897. After his death in Vienna, his remains were transferred to Israel and interred on Mount Herzl in 1949. Shimon Herzl, a Jewish community leader in Belgrade, was closely associated with Rabbi Yehuda Alkalai, whose ideas prefigured Zionism; Rivka Herzl supported her husband’s communal activities.
