GM to Unveil Proprietary In-Vehicle AI Assistant Later This Year

General Motors announced that it will launch a native, in-vehicle artificial-intelligence assistant later this year. The system is described as a deeper integration of conversational AI with vehicle knowledge and OnStar intelligence, aiming to go beyond the capabilities of the existing Google-based Gemini assistant. It is expected to handle functions such as climate control, radio settings, and a “kids setting” that tailors music, seat positions, heating/cooling, and door locks for child passengers.

Earlier this year, GM began rolling out Google’s Gemini AI in eligible 2022-model-year and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles across the United States. Gemini allows natural-language commands, “live sessions” for conversational interaction, and basic vehicle controls, but operates primarily through a phone interface. GM’s upcoming assistant is positioned as the next step in a broader AI strategy, moving from a top-level, third-party assistant to a proprietary system built on GM-specific data.

Santos told CNBC that the new assistant will be “more deeply integrated” and will combine conversational AI with GM’s vehicle telemetry and predictive-maintenance data. She emphasized that the technology is being developed with an unnamed large-language-model provider to ensure the data remains proprietary to GM. The company has not disclosed a product name or detailed technical specifications at this stage.
