Stop & Shop Plans to Close Four Northeastern Stores Amid Ongoing Performance Review

8/1/2026, 2:17:21 PM

Latest Store Closures

Stop & Shop announced that three locations in New Jersey—Basking Ridge, Westfield, and the Lakewood Road store in Toms River—and one store in Clinton, Connecticut will shut down before the end of the year. Employees affected will be offered transfers to other Stop & Shop locations.

Recent Closure History and Scale

The retailer, which operates more than 350 stores across five states, has been reducing its footprint for over a year. Over the past 18 months the chain has closed roughly three dozen stores, according to Stop & Shop. In the 2024 wave, the company shuttered two stores in Rhode Island, five in Connecticut, seven in New York, eight in Massachusetts, and ten in New Jersey. Earlier this year it also closed seven e-commerce fulfillment warehouses, shifting online order fulfillment to individual stores.

Financial Pressures and Competitive Landscape

Industry analysts note that grocery margins sit between 1 percent and 3 percent, making them vulnerable to rising supply-chain costs and shifting consumer preferences. The U.K.–based Oxford College of Procurement and Supply linked higher transit times and fuel consumption to increased operating expenses for grocers. At the same time, shoppers are gravitating toward discount chains such as Walmart, Aldi and Dollar General, a trend amplified by elevated inflation that peaked at 4.2 percent in May and fell to 3.5 percent in June.

Official Statements & Responses

Stop & Shop’s spokesperson emphasized that each store decision is made independently and that no additional closures are planned for the affected markets. President Roger Wheeler highlighted the company’s pricing strategy, stating:

> “With affordability a top priority for families today, delivering meaningful savings with lower prices on thousands of items across our stores in New York and New Jersey marks an important milestone in our broader strategy.” — Roger Wheeler, President of Stop & Shop “With affordability a top priority for families today, delivering meaningful savings with lower prices on thousands of items across our stores in New York and New Jersey marks an important milestone in our broader strategy,” — Roger Wheeler, President of Stop & Shop, in a press release

The parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA, did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.
