Chicago’s pitching staff has been hit by a series of injuries. Reliever Daniel Palencia, the team’s 2025 saves leader, has been on the 15-day injured list since June 16 after a mild right elbow flexor strain was diagnosed following right-elbow inflammation in the win over the Colorado Rockies on June 15. The rotation is also depleted, with starters such as Justin Steele (out since April 2025 after Tommy John surgery and a later flexor setback) and others listed on the injured list throughout July.

- Gavin Hollowell – Right-handed reliever, 28, placed on the 15-day IL with right-shoulder inflammation. In 14 appearances this season he posted a 2.51 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, one save and one hold over 14.1 innings.
- Antoine Kelly – Left-handed pitcher, 26, recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Since the Cubs acquired him for cash on June 6, he has a 1-1 record with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 19.1 innings at the Triple-A level. He has not yet appeared in a major-league game.
- Daniel Palencia – Right-handed closer, 26, limited to 19 games (16.2 innings) this season with a 2-1 record, 2.70 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and three saves.
The Cubs have gone 24-12 since Palencia’s placement on the injured list in mid-June.

Manager Craig Counsell indicated that Palencia will throw a live bullpen session in Chicago over the weekend; the outcome will determine whether he proceeds to a minor-league rehab assignment.
MLB.com projected that Palencia could return “sometime in mid-August” if the bullpen session goes well.
