Cleveland’s New WNBA Franchise Hints at “Sirens” Name

Sand Sculpture Suggests Team Name

A sand sculpture appeared on Edgewater Beach on Friday, displaying the phrase “HEAR THE CALL” alongside a light-blue and white basketball. The artwork was installed ahead of the Sand Fest event scheduled for Saturday and is being interpreted as a clue toward the franchise’s eventual nickname.

Trademark Filings and Naming Options

In May, an organization linked to the Cleveland WNBA franchise filed trademark applications for eight potential names: Sirens, Novas, Riveters, Crown, Founders, Racers, Breakers, and the previously used Rockers. The Siren moniker aligns with the mythological creature whose alluring song lured sailors to shipwrecks. The organization has not ruled out reviving the Rockers name, though the trademark for that brand is currently held by the owner and president of the Women’s Basketball League, a proposed league that has not yet launched.

Historical Context of Cleveland’s WNBA Presence

Cleveland previously hosted the Rockers, a franchise that operated from 1997 to 2003 before folding. The new team will become the league’s 16th franchise, marking the city’s return to the WNBA after more than two decades.

Team Timeline and League Placement

The expansion team is slated to begin competition in the spring of 2028. Its entry expands the league to 16 clubs, reflecting ongoing growth in women’s professional basketball.

Potential Branding Implications

Choosing a mythologically themed name would place Cleveland alongside other WNBA clubs that draw on legend, such as the Golden State Valkyries. A “Sirens” identity could influence marketing, merchandise, and community outreach by leveraging the cultural resonance of the siren myth while differentiating the franchise within the league’s expanding brand landscape.
