The Guardian has detailed a series of large-scale monetary transfers that link Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, to billionaire donor Christopher Harborne and to convicted fraudster George Cottrell. In April 2024, Harborne made an unconditional deed-of-gift of £5 million to Farage. The same year, Cottrell transferred more than $2 million to his mother Fiona, who subsequently donated £1 million to Britain Means Business—a fundraising vehicle controlled by Reform UK deputy Richard Tice—on June 10 2024, with half of that sum moving immediately into the party. Additional donations from Fiona of £250,000 each were made in May 2024. Cottrell also provided a £78,100 “bridging loan” to Tice’s company in late 2024, which Tice repaid after making a £613,000 donation to Reform UK through the same corporate entity.

Reform UK’s financing appears to rely heavily on a small network of personal relationships. Farage is described as a close friend of Cottrell, who the party has called an unpaid adviser but who has never held an official position. Cottrell’s mother, of aristocratic background but modest means, has become a significant donor. Richard Tice, Farage’s deputy, has known the Cottrell family for five decades and controls the Britain Means Business vehicle that channels donations.

The Metropolitan Police have interviewed both George and Fiona Cottrell under caution as part of a probe into the 2024 donations. Two parliamentary standards investigations are scheduled for completion in the autumn: one examining the £5 million gift from Harborne, the other reviewing Farage’s benefits from Cottrell. Farage has responded to the Guardian’s reporting with legal threats and claims of an “establishment plot,” while Harborne’s lawyers maintain the gift was unconditional and made without expectation of Farage’s political return.
