During the Iran-Iraq war’s 1981-88 “tanker war,” Iraq launched 283 attacks on merchant ships, prompting the United Nations-backed Operation Earnest Will (24 July 1987–26 Sept 1988) in which the United States deployed thirteen warships to escort about eighty tankers through the Persian Gulf.
