History

Historical Context

On 22 November 1995 a magnitude 7.1 quake struck the Gulf of Aqaba along the Dead Sea Transform, killing eight and injuring 30 across Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The shock ended decades of quiescence and prompted the four nations to expand their seismic networks, recording roughly 1,000 aftershocks. It remains the strongest event in the Jordan Rift Valley since the 1927 Jericho earthquake.
