Freddy Peralta Traded to the Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-hander Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets in exchange for outfielder Aidan Smith, infielder Emilien Pitre, and right-hander Gary Gill Hill. The deal was announced on a Sunday, with the Mets learning of the trade during a 2-0 loss to the Miami Marlins at Citi Field.

The Mets had obtained Peralta in January, pairing him with rookie Nolan McLean and other recent acquisitions to build a championship-level rotation. Six months later, the Mets sit in last place in the National League East and carry the second-highest payroll in MLB. The underperformance has prompted the front office to unload veterans ahead of the upcoming trade deadline, beginning with reliever A.J. Minter and now Peralta.

Peralta entered the 2024 season after posting a 2.70 ERA over 33 starts with the Milwaukee Brewers. In Tampa Bay, his 2024 numbers have slipped to a 4.99 ERA across 113 2/3 innings and 22 starts. He has failed to pitch beyond the sixth inning in half of his outings and has not completed five innings in 15 starts. His strikeout rate fell from 28.2 % to 22.1 %, and his whiff rate dropped from 30.1 % to 26.8 %. The Rays’ rotation—featuring Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan, and Nick Martinez—ranks among the American League’s best in walks, runs allowed, WHIP (1.12) and ERA (3.50).
