Intensifying Heat Across the Continent
Temperatures that once were considered extreme are now becoming routine. Near-40 °C (104 °F) readings have been recorded in Prague, while the Copernicus Climate Change Service reports that late-May and June heatwaves pushed daily averages more than 10 °C (18 °F) above normal in parts of France, the United Kingdom and Spain. In June, western Europe’s average temperature was 20.74 °C (69 °F), roughly 3 °C (5.4 °F) higher than the 1991-2020 baseline. The service notes that heatwaves are arriving earlier, lasting longer and affecting a larger number of countries simultaneously.
Wildfires and Water Resources Under Pressure
Prolonged drought and extreme heat have dried vegetation, turning forests, scrubland and grasslands into fuel for larger, earlier-starting fires. The European Union recorded at least 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) burned in the most recent year—almost double the historical average. Some fires generate pyrocumulonimbus clouds that spread embers kilometers away, complicating containment. Simultaneously, higher temperatures increase evaporation from rivers, lakes and reservoirs while reducing soil moisture. Major waterways such as the Rhine, Po and Danube have experienced unusually low levels, disrupting shipping, hydroelectric generation and industrial cooling.
Economic, Agricultural and Health Consequences
The European Environment Agency estimates that extreme weather has cost Europe €738 billion ($850 bn) from 1980 to 2023, with €162 billion ($190 bn) incurred in the most recent three-year span. It projects that insufficient climate action could raise total economic losses to over €5.6 trillion ($6.4 trillion) by 2050. A study released by the European Investment Bank and the European Commission in May predicts that climate change could raise annual agricultural losses by up to 66 % by 2050, threatening food production. Health impacts are also rising; hospitals report more admissions for dehydration, heatstroke and cardiovascular events, especially among the elderly, children and those with pre-existing conditions.
Adaptation Efforts and Outlook
Cities are responding by planting trees for shade, redesigning streets, expanding early-warning systems and establishing cooling centres for vulnerable residents. Water-conservation measures, improved forest management and more resilient infrastructure are entering long-term planning. Farmers are testing drought-resistant crops, adjusting planting schedules and adopting efficient irrigation. Nonetheless, scientists stress that adaptation alone will not suffice without substantial reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions, as the climate drivers of extreme heat and fire are expected to intensify across both Southern and traditionally milder Northern Europe.
