On 27 October 2002, during the economic crisis of Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s second term, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party won the presidential runoff with 52.7 million votes (61.3%). His centrist “Letter to the Brazilian People” and choice of businessman José Alencar as running mate ended the PSDB’s two-term rule.
