Angels Trade Jo Adell to Guardians for Prospect Jacob Cozart

8/4/2026, 12:39:26 AM

Trade Details

In a move announced this week, the Los Angeles Angels sent outfielder Jo Adell to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for catching prospect Jacob Cozart. The transaction was carried out by the Angels’ interim general manager John Mozeliak ahead of the 6 p.m. PT trade-deadline.

Player Performance Overview

Adell, a 27-year-old outfielder who will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2027 season, has been a high-ceiling but inconsistent talent. From 2020 through 2024 he posted a career slash line of .211/.268/.381 and registered a -7 WAR rating on Baseball-Reference. After a breakout 2025 season in which he posted a .778 OPS with 37 home runs and 98 RBIs, his 2026 performance regressed to .239/.287/.395 with 108 strikeouts and 16 walks in 456 plate appearances. Defensively, he has struggled with strikeouts, errant fielding and occasional baserunning lapses, though he has shown flashes of strong play, such as robbing three home runs in a single game.

Cozart, a second-round pick out of NC State in 2024, is a defense-first catcher who was ranked as the Guardians’ 18th-best prospect by MLB.com. In Double-A he posted a slash line of .239/.330/.384.

Angels’ Roster Management

Adell is the fourth controllable player moved by Mozeliak this season. Earlier trades sent reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe to the Texas Rangers, starter Jose Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays, and veteran reliever Brent Suter (a pending free agent) to the Atlanta Braves. The organization is also fielding interest in shortstop Zach Neto (controllable through 2029) and starter Reid Detmers (through 2028), and could consider additional moves before the deadline.
