Historical Context

The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), founded on March 3 1915, opened a pressure tunnel at Langley Research Center in 1950, giving engineers the first supersonic wind-tunnel capability. After NACA merged into NASA in 1958, the agency’s wind-tunnel complex has continued to support modern hypersonic vehicle and parachute research for defense and space exploration.
