Wikipedia Faces Multi-Front Pressures

Supporters of former President Donald Trump, led by Elon Musk, have publicly accused Wikipedia of political bias and antisemitism and have questioned its nonprofit status. At the same time, artificial-intelligence tools are increasingly pulling content from the encyclopedia, diverting traffic and attention. Governments with repressive records have detained volunteer editors, sending some to penal colonies. These combined pressures are described as unprecedented in Wikipedia’s roughly 25-year history.

In response, the Wikimedia Foundation has boosted its lobbying budget and launched a Times Square advertising campaign to defend the site’s independence. The foundation is now charging major tech firms—including Google and Meta—for the use of Wikipedia’s roughly 65 million articles and is throttling access for certain data scrapers. It is also expanding its human-rights team to protect volunteers from harassment, surveillance and retaliation.

Bernadette Meehan, a former U.S. ambassador to Chile and senior State Department official, took over as chief executive of the Wikimedia Foundation in January. Drawing on experience negotiating nuclear deals with Iran and facilitating talks with Cuba, Meehan has emphasized a diplomatic, rather than combative, approach. She has declined to characterize Wikipedia’s situation as a “war,” noting her own exposure to actual conflict during a 2007 deployment in Iraq.
