Tama Lions Heatstroke
- Female lions – Mugi (3), Ichigo (11) and Luena (15) – died of suspected heatstroke at Tama Zoological Park on July 28, July 31 and August 2.
- Ten of the park’s sixteen lions showed lethargy and loss of appetite, prompting staff treatment on July 18 and closure of lion enclosure on July 23.
- Post-mortem exams found severe dehydration and organ failure, indicating heat stress as a cause during a heat wave that pushed Tokyo temperatures to 39 °C.
