Background and Outbreak Timeline
The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak on May 15 after a cluster of deaths in the northeastern Ituri province. The outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no proven treatments, vaccines or post-exposure prophylaxis exist, although several experimental options are under evaluation.

Ongoing Clinical Efforts and Planned Trials
WHO’s research lead Vasee Moorthy reported early indications of promise from vaccine and therapeutic trials. Two leading vaccine candidates are in development: a ChAdOx1-based vaccine (University of Oxford/Serum Institute of India) and an mRNA vaccine by Moderna. A Phase I trial of the ChAdOx1 candidate is scheduled for July 24 in Britain, while the Moderna candidate is slated to begin Phase I trials in Canada “this week.”
A WHO vaccine advisory group is set to review trial data on July 31 and will issue recommendations later that week. In Ituri, the monoclonal antibody MBP134, the antiviral remdesivir, and the oral antiviral obeldesivir are being tested in patients and high-risk contacts, respectively. Moorthy noted that new data are emerging on whether the existing Ervebo vaccine (effective against the Zaire strain) might provide cross-protection against Bundibugyo in animal studies.
