In April 1988, after Iran-laid mines sank the frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts on 14 April, the U.S. Navy launched Operation Praying Mantis, destroying two Iranian oil platforms, two frigates and a fast-attack missile boat in the Gulf. The raid, ordered by President Ronald Reagan during Ruhollah Khomeini’s rule, pressured Iran toward the July cease-fire that ended the Iran-Iraq War and regional shipping.
