Nintendo Unveils *Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave*

Core Plot Reveal
Nintendo’s presentation introduced *Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave* as a story that follows four playable protagonists—Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda—who compete in the Heroic Games, a gladiatorial arena tournament, to have a personal wish granted. Players can switch among the four characters at any time, with each storyline progressing independently, underscoring the game’s theme of intertwining fortunes.
The arena era occurs five years before the game’s true setting, where the world has been devastated by the returning demon god Balor. The progenitor god Sothis summons a nameless hero clad in white, who travels back in time to influence the champions’ fates and assemble them for a final confrontation against Balor.
Gameplay Mechanics
Nintendo detailed a blend of classic and new combat systems. Battles retain turn-based grid combat, allowing players to assemble a team of units and position them on the field. Units wield swords, gauntlets, spears, axes, bows, magic, and a gun-like gauntlet.
Combat Arts deliver high damage at the cost of weapon durability, while Blaze Arts trigger special moves that consume HP. For example, Cai can launch a fireball that inflicts burn damage; Dietrich can instantly teleport; and Leda can buff allies and summon a monster. After any move, players may rewind to a previous point in the battle to correct mistakes.
Classes are organized into three tiers. Beginner classes (five total) cover foundational roles such as gladiators, diviners, and ornius riders. Specialty classes (over ten) provide focused abilities, including armored knights, winged soldiers, and charioteers. Advanced classes represent mastery, featuring cataphracts, guardians, and elephant riders.
Outside the arena, players can train, watch rival battles for intel, shop for weapons and enhancements, and volunteer at temples for temporary stat buffs. Certification exams unlock new classes when prerequisite skills are met. Side quests impose deadlines, and certain NPCs require gifts or meals to join the cause. Inns allow lodging, meals, and passive resource gain. The world map beyond Dagsion offers towns, random encounters, and dungeons; dungeon battles use traditional turn-based combat rather than grid movement.
