Eagles Day 5 Training Camp: Sloppy Offense, Key Injuries, and Emerging Winners

8/5/2026, 5:14:39 PM

Core Event – What Happened on Day 5

The Philadelphia Eagles completed Day 5 with a 1-hour-50-minute full-pads practice in sunny conditions. The offense was disjointed, committing several pre-snap penalties and failing to find a rhythm, while the defense continued to dominate drills.

Injury Report and Depth-Chart Adjustments

Three offensive starters were absent: left tackle Lane Johnson (excused), WR DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon (hamstring). Additional injuries included OLB Jonathan Greenard (pec), OLB Keyshawn James-Newby (ankle), OG Micah Morris (shoulder), OG Jaeden Roberts (calf), and WR Britain Covey (left early).

With Johnson out, rookie right tackle Markel Bell received first-team reps at right tackle, and Fred Johnson worked as the second-team left tackle. Quarterback depth saw Tanner McKee get his first second-team QB reps, rotating with Andy Dalton and Jalen Hurts.

Offensive Struggles

Hurts threw four deep passes, none completed: an interception by safety Michael Carter (to Hollywood Brown), an incomplete to Quez Watkins, and a miss to Elijah Moore in triple coverage. He recorded his second summer interception.

Two positives emerged: Hurts completed a deep-out pass to Dontayvion Wicks on 3rd-and-9, and Wicks secured a contested catch against Quinyon Mitchell. In the red zone, Andy Dalton hit Darius Cooper on a one-handed catch that was ruled out of bounds.

Defensive Highlights

Michael Carter shifted between safety and nickel, making the interception on Hurts. In 1-on-1 drills, Cooper DeJean broke up a pass intended for Brown, and Jalen Carter slipped past Tyler Steen. Rookie Joshua Weru stripped John Ojukwu of his helmet in a drill.

Winners and Losers – Position Battles

  • Dontayvion Wicks solidified himself as the front-runner for WR2.
  • Markel Bell earned first-team reps at right tackle, drawing staff attention.
  • Darius Cooper’s one-handed catch reinforced his case for WR5.
  • Joshua Weru, an International Pathway player, recorded a sack in 11-on-11 drills.

Hollywood Brown failed to capitalize on a deep pass that resulted in an interception, raising doubts about his WR2 prospects. Will Shipley dropped a wide-open pass, a key error in the RB3 race. Fred Johnson surrendered a sack at left tackle, questioning his swing-tackle role.

Additional Observations

Veteran Jason Kelce, former Eagle center, attended the practice with former Eagle Beau Allen and 76ers executive Mike Gansey. Defensive linemen Jihaad Campbell and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. each recorded a sack in drills. A brief altercation involved Drew Mukuba, Dontayvion Wicks, and Quinyon Mitchell.

Why It Matters

Day 5 highlighted how key offensive absences affect rhythm while giving younger players a chance to earn reps. Defensive performances suggest depth that could offset early-season injuries.

What’s Next

The Eagles will hold another full-pads practice the next day and a walkthrough on Thursday, providing further opportunities to solidify roles before the preseason.
