Female-Friendship Series Redefine Streaming Success

8/5/2026, 6:17:04 PM

Breakout Success of Two Summer Hits

In early July 2026, Peacock debuted Five Star Weekend and Prime Video released Ride Or Die only six days apart. Both shows center on long-standing female friendships—Garner, Sevigny and Hall portray a widow and her lifelong friends in *Five Star Weekend*; Waddingham and Spencer play an assassin and her politician-wife confidante in *Ride Or Die*. Critics responded positively, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting 91 % for *Five Star Weekend* and 97 % for *Ride Or Die*. Their unexpected popularity has positioned each as a likely candidate for a second season, with *Five Star Weekend* slated to be renewed first.

Viewership Performance

*Five Star Weekend* launched on July 9 as Peacock’s top scripted title, accumulating over 1 billion minutes watched in its first week and 1.8 billion minutes to date. Luminate recorded 472 K views on day one, 4.28 million U.S. views in the first full week, 2.62 million in week 3 and 1.07 million in week 4. The series entered Luminate’s Top 50 for July 3-9 at No. 13 despite a single qualifying day, and it remains the only scripted entry in Peacock’s daily Top 10.

*Ride Or Die* premiered on July 15 and instantly claimed the No. 1 spot in Prime Video’s U.S. daily rankings, a position it has held continuously. Luminate logged 927 K views in the first two days—double the debut of Prime’s YA series *Elle*—and 3.85 million U.S. views in the first full week, placing it second only to Netflix’s *Hawk*. In week 3, the show posted 2.57 million views, trailing Netflix’s *Ransom Canyon*. Globally, *Ride Or Die* has been the most-watched Prime Video original for two consecutive weeks.

Shifting Industry Perception of Older Female Audiences

Historically, network television and early streaming favored the 18-49 demographic, leaving shows about women in their 50s rare. The success of these two series follows earlier titles such as *Grace and Frankie* and *The Four Seasons*, but their strong ratings and cross-gender appeal suggest a broader market for “women of a certain age” (WOCA) narratives that prioritize friendship over romance.

Outlook for Season Renewals and Future Programming

Both series were conceived as limited runs but are structured for continuation, and industry projections anticipate season-two renewals. Their performance may encourage streamers to develop additional programs centered on enduring female friendships, potentially expanding the demographic reach of scripted streaming content.
