Measles Outbreak in New Mexico Costs Nearly $5.4 Million

In early 2025 an undervaccinated community in Texas experienced a measles surge that crossed into New Mexico the following month. The outbreak was declared over by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in September 2025. Researchers from the New Mexico Department of Health and the CDC estimated that containing the 2025 New Mexico outbreak cost almost $5.4 million. The same year, the United States recorded 2,371 measles infections—the highest annual total in 35 years—driven in part by vaccine disinformation and declining immunization rates.
