Release Schedule and Cast Highlights
TriCoast Worldwide and Vitagraph Films have set a theatrical debut for the Adam Rifkin-directed western comedy *Last Train to Fortune*. The film will open in New York in mid-September, with subsequent engagements in Dallas and Los Angeles later that month and an expanding rollout to additional markets throughout the fall. The New York engagement, beginning on September 17 at Village East by Angelika, will feature appearances by members of the cast and filmmakers, and similar events are planned for the other cities. The ensemble includes Malcolm McDowell as schoolteacher Cecil Peachtree, James Paxton (the late Bill Paxton’s son) as outlaw Jedidiah Dooley, Mary Steenburgen, Bernadette Peters and Laura Marano. Retrospective screenings of McDowell’s earlier work will accompany the New York run.
Production Background
The screenplay, written by Michelle Rifkin 37 years ago, was originally intended for Bill Paxton opposite McDowell, with Lindsay Anderson slated to direct before his death. After Paxton’s unexpected passing in 2017, the project was revived with his son James stepping into the role of Dooley. Producer Brad Wyman, Michael P.J. Gerstein and Adam Rifkin have shepherded the film to completion, preserving the original vision while adapting to the new casting.
Thematic Emphasis and Director’s Intent
Adam Rifkin has emphasized that, although the story is set in the 1870s, its message resonates with contemporary concerns about book bans and attacks on education. He argues that the film underscores the idea that “education sets us free,” positioning the narrative as a timely commentary on current cultural debates.
Actor Perspective on the Film’s Message
James Paxton has expressed that the project felt compelling from the moment he was approached nine years ago. He notes that the story celebrates mentorship, the value of reading and the importance of education, especially at a time when those pillars are perceived to be under threat.
Distribution Strategy
TriCoast Worldwide will handle worldwide rights beyond the initial theatrical window, covering VOD, digital, home-entertainment and international distribution. The coordinated rollout and ancillary market plans aim to maximize the film’s reach across both domestic and global audiences.
