Gary Glitter Appears in London Court on Historic Sex Offences

Court Appearance
On August 5, the 82-year-old former pop star Paul Gadd, known as Gary Glitter, appeared by video link from His Majesty’s Prison Channings Wood at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. He confirmed his name and date of birth, stated he is “extremely deaf,” and denied any knowledge of the alleged victim when shown her photograph. The hearing lasted roughly 11 minutes, after which he was remanded in custody pending a further hearing at the Old Bailey on September 2.
Prior Convictions
Gadd is already serving a 16-year sentence imposed in 2015 for the sexual abuse of three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. He was released on licence in 2023 but was recalled weeks later for breaching licence conditions. Earlier convictions include a 1999 jail term for possession of child pornography, a 2002 deportation from Cambodia over suspected offences, and a 2006 Vietnamese court conviction for obscene acts with two girls aged 10 and 11, resulting in a four-year sentence.
Charges and Allegations
Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC told the court that Gadd is charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. The alleged offences are said to have occurred at Gadd’s Kensington home between 1978 and 1981, when the complainant was aged eight to eleven. The complainant alleges that Gadd gave her chocolate and invited her into his house, where the abuse took place.
Official Proceedings
The Metropolitan Police recorded the complaint on 9 January 2025 and launched an investigation. Gadd was first interviewed on 22 July 2024 in connection with the case. Police indicated that the alleged victim is being supported by specialist officers and has been informed of the charges.
Future Hearing
Gadd remains in custody at HMP Channings Wood in Devon. His next scheduled appearance is at the Old Bailey on September 2, where the case will proceed further.
