History

Historical Context

In April 2014 an avalanche in the Khumbu Icefall killed 16 Nepali Sherpa guides. It followed the October 2014 snowstorm that buried trekkers on Annapurna and Dhaulagiri and was succeeded by the April 2015 earthquake-triggered avalanche that killed at least 24. These consecutive disasters highlighted Nepal’s recurring high-altitude hazards.
