Drone with Explosives Sparks Mid-Air Collision at Leipzig Airport

A quadcopter loaded with an explosive device was spotted by an airport employee in the cargo-operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig-Halle Airport, a facility classified as critical infrastructure. The drone was seized by police, who deployed a bomb-disposal robot to examine it. After the runway was closed, a DHL cargo plane aborted its landing, climbed away, and collided with an unidentified object before landing safely in Hanover with minor damage. Several passenger flights, including one from Mallorca, were diverted; operations on the northern part of the airport resumed within two hours, while the southern runway remained shut.

The airport has previously been linked to sabotage investigations, including incendiary devices found in DHL warehouses and freight shipments across Europe in 2024. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, then on holiday in Italy, announced plans to travel to Leipzig for meetings with federal and state officials.
